This is the script for the feature film I am attempting to write. It is not finished yet but here is what I have so far.

This is a script that is to be written to suit a sound track that is already written. The sound track is written by the group Jars of Clay. I have decided to write this script because while listening to the CD "Flood" by Jars of Clay, I got an idea of a movie in my mind. This that follows is an attempt to put this script onto paper. It will most definitely not be the precise story that was put into my head but it will be based upon and follow the same line.

The story is about two young boy's struggle against the fates following the death of their sole family their mother. The eldest boy's name is Judas, a young man about 19 years old. His younger brother is Mike (Rice), he is young (10) and innocent to the knowledge of the harshness of the world.

The opening shot is of a storefront in the lower Harlem area of Vancouver BC. There are cops and ambulances all around and there are a large bustle of activity, noise and flashing lights. The camera is in the very middle of all this facing the front of the store. The windows are all shattered and there is glass, metal and grocery goods littering the streets; as the camera moves in we see off to the right hand side of the store just inside an alley, Judas. He is crumpled against the stores wall weeping fiercely (he is wearing well-worn blue jeans and a not so white T-shirt, on his feet he has canvas sneakers and white socks). The camera moves in on Judas and as it approaches we see the lifeless body of a lady in his arms. (Previously not seen because of camera angle and lighting.) She is no more than 34 years old and very beautiful; her body is limp and lifeless. She is wearing a summer dress with flowers covering, it is blood soaked and torn. The sky begins to weep, rain falls in torrents and begins to wash the blood off Judas's face and body. He picks up the lady and begins to slowly walk down the ally away from the store and the street. The camera remains static watching the boy carry the body down the ally, slowly it begins to move to look down at the spot where the young man sat. The rain is streaming on the pavement and beginning to puddle we can see the blood mingling with the rainwater and disappearing. (End scene one)

The next shot is in the middle of a dense and dark forest. We are looking at the backs of two young boys standing side by side. The older boy is the same one that was in the opening scene (he is wearing a pair of wrinkled tan dress pants and a black T-shirt), he is standing motionless and is staring straight ahead into the heart of the woods. He has hold of Rice's hand. The boys are standing over a fresh grave, there is a spade leaning against a tree and only a rough cross made of sticks string and wire at the head of the grave. The camera begins to pan around to the front of the boys; it is here that we see their faces. Judas has medium length unkempt blond hair; he is unshaven and dirties. His eyes are Grey and deep; he has aged a lot in the last 24 hrs. There are tearstains on his rough weathered face; he is silent and still as though his body is a hollow shell void of the spirit that drives it. The younger boy (Rice) has auburn hair (much the same as the ladies in the opening shot), he too has blue/grey eyes deep and filled with confusion. As the camera scrolls by we see the reflection of thick forest and mountains in his eyes. The eyes are dry and void of any signs of tears but there is a deep look of misunderstanding and fear. The camera pulls away from their faces to show the two of them standing alone in silence. Through the trees at their backs we can see a Volkswagen camper van parked by on the side of a narrow mountain logging road.

The boys stand in silence for a while longer then Rice turns and looks up at Judas with a look of questioning. Judas notices the change in movement and slowly looks down into the eyes of his younger brother. He forces a look of reassurance onto his face and without a word he squeezes Rice's hand. They turn and slowly begin to walk back towards the van. The camera watches them go for a short time then pulls away and focuses on the cross at the head of the grave. There is a clear jar tied to the bottom of the cross and in it visible to the viewer is a sheet of hand written paper reading like this: "Mary Gowen , born march 09 1967 died April 17th 1999. She was placed here by her sons Judas and Michael. She has been lain here in the wild because she is an illegal immigrant and we her sons did not know of anything else to do. She was killed by a bullet in the chest during an armed robbery at the Brandon corner grocery store where she worked as a cashier. Rest in peace mother." Camera fades out. (End scene two)

The next scene is shot from the top of the van. The scene opens with the van parked beside a mountain stream, there is a fire burning within a few feet of the van and it is dusk. Judas is sitting in the middle of the stream bathing there is a bar of soap close by on a rock. Rice comes out of the van wearing a pair of well-worn sweat pants and a spider man sweat shirt. He sits down on a rock near the fire and begins to stir a pot of soup that has been simmering on the side of the fire. Judas picks up the soap and comes out of the stream he goes to the van puts down the soap, tooth brush and paste then grabs a pare of sweats that were hanging on the side view mirror and puts them on. He grabs a bowl and a couple of spoons from the van and walks over to the fire. After putting down the bowl and spoons he moves to sit down beside rice and puts a hand on his shoulder. Rice has been staring into the fire vacantly and at the touch of his brothers hand on his shoulder starts in fright and spills the soup into the fire. Judas is quick to react and lunges at the pot with his bare hand catching it just as the contents begin to spill out. We hear a sizzling sound as the cold water on his hand hits the hot metal of the pot. He pulls the pot backs up to the rock were it was previously sitting before letting go. He quickly jerks his hand away cursing violently and begins to shake it to cool the fingers and ease the pain. He runs to the creek and plunges his hand in. there is a towel on the ground by the stream, which he soaks and raps around his hand. Rice is still sitting over by the fire when Judas whirls around and begins to yell.

"What the hell was that Rice? Thetas all we have you know. Shit we barely have enough food to get by without you dumping it all into the fuckn fire. Damit."

He is about to go on screaming when his eyes meet those of his little brother. He is cut short like a rope was suddenly pulled taunt around his neck cutting off his air. (The camera is from Judas's POV.) We see the face of rice in the dime light of the evening with the fire flickering in his eyes. There are tears streaming down his face but he isn't making a sound, he is just sitting there staring at Judas with a sorrow that is not of his brothers causing. It is as if he is oblivious to what just happened. "Aw shit!! (whispered). I'm so sorry rice, I'm sorry..." He kneels down in front of his brother and pulls him into a hug. Rice begins to weep and babble uncontrollably. "I didn't mean to Jud ...I was just stirring it ...just stirring...I'm sorry...." Judas now has tears in his eyes, he is again the young boy in the ally. "Easy rice its not your fault, ... I startled you, it was my fault don't worry. It was all my fault." Judas holds rice for a long while with both of them crying. It is rice who breaks the silence. "Is your hand real bad Jud? It looks like it hurts." "Nah, it's just burned that's all. It will be fine if I just bandage it up. I jus
